AI Coding Assistant Pricing for Teams: Copilot, Cursor, Claude Code
Paying for an AI coding assistant got more complicated in October 2026. Cursor is now sold inside SpaceX’s X Subscription alongside Grok and X Premium, while Anthropic and OpenAI bundle Claude Code and Codex into their team chat plans. This guide compares what a development team actually pays per seat, based on the vendors’ public pricing pages on October 17, 2026.
Which AI coding assistant is cheapest for a team?
GitHub Copilot Business has the lowest dedicated list price at $19 per user per month. But if your company already pays for ChatGPT Business or Claude Team, developers get Codex or Claude Code inside that $20–$25 seat, so the cheapest option is often the one you are already paying for.
| Tool | Best for | Team starting price (per user/month) | Free plan | Key limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| GitHub Copilot Business | Teams on GitHub that want governance and IP indemnity | $19 | Yes (Copilot Free, 2,000 completions/month) | Usage measured in credits (1,900 per user on Business) |
| Cursor (The X Subscription) | Developers who want an AI-first editor | $30 (Premium; Teams “$30+” per user) | Yes (starter allowance) | Third-party models billed separately at API prices |
| Claude Code (Claude Team) | Teams that also want Claude for writing and research | $20 billed annually, $25 monthly | Claude Code not included in Free | Team plan designed for 2–150 users |
| Codex (ChatGPT Business) | Companies standardizing on ChatGPT | $20 billed annually, $25 monthly | Limited Codex access on Free | 2-seat minimum, 200-seat maximum |

How much does GitHub Copilot cost for teams?
Copilot Business costs $19 per user per month and Copilot Enterprise $39, according to GitHub’s plans page. Business includes unlimited code completions, the cloud agent and code review, a broad model catalog, access to third-party agents, budget and access controls, IP indemnity and 1,900 credits per user; Enterprise adds priority access to new models and 2,000 more credits per user.
For individuals, GitHub lists Free ($0, 2,000 completions a month), Pro ($10), Pro+ ($39) and Max ($100). Note that the cloud agent and code review run on GitHub Actions and consume Actions minutes.
- Best for: organizations already on GitHub that need policy controls.
- Pros: lowest team price here, works in VS Code, Visual Studio, JetBrains, Xcode and more, third-party agents included.
- Cons: credit-based usage takes some monitoring; agent features also draw on Actions minutes.
- Pricing (as of October 2026): Business $19, Enterprise $39 per user per month.
How much does Cursor cost now that it is part of The X Subscription?
Cursor’s paid plans now start at $30 a month on the Premium tier of The X Subscription, which SpaceX announced on October 12, 2026. SpaceX says Premium replaces what used to cost about $90 a month across SuperGrok, Cursor Pro and X Premium+.
The tiers are Free, Plus ($8, Grok models only in Cursor), Premium ($30, 4x Plus usage), Super ($100, 15x) and Ultra ($200, 50x). Grok and Cursor draw from a shared usage pool. Teams can buy Premium, Super and Ultra per seat, with SSO, admin controls, consolidated billing and usage analytics; Cursor’s pricing page lists Teams at “$30+” per user per month. Models from other providers, such as Anthropic and OpenAI, are available on Premium and above but billed separately at API list prices.
- Best for: developers who want an AI-native editor and are happy with Grok as the default model.
- Pros: cloud agents, Bugbot code review and code hosting included from Premium; one bill for Grok, Cursor and X.
- Cons: using Claude or GPT models adds variable API costs; the bundle includes X features many companies do not need.
- Pricing (as of October 2026): Premium $30, Super $100, Ultra $200 per month; Teams from $30 per user.
Existing SuperGrok, Cursor and X Premium subscribers can keep their current plan and price, according to SpaceX.
How much does Claude Code cost for a team?
Claude Code is included in Claude Team at $20 per Standard seat per month billed annually or $25 monthly; Premium seats cost $100 or $125 and offer five times the usage. Individually, Claude Code comes with Pro ($17 a month billed annually, $20 monthly) and Max (from $100 a month).
Team also includes pooled API credits of up to $500 a month, SSO and central billing, so the same seat covers chat, research and coding. The Free plan does not include Claude Code.
- Best for: teams that want one subscription for coding and knowledge work.
- Pros: coding and chat in one seat; Premium seats for heavy users only.
- Cons: intensive coding sessions can hit Standard limits; Team is designed for up to 150 users.
- Pricing (as of October 2026): Standard $20 annual / $25 monthly; Premium $100 / $125.
How much does OpenAI Codex cost for a team?
Codex is included in every ChatGPT Business seat: $20 per user per month billed annually or $25 monthly for Standard, and $100 or $125 for Premium with five times the usage and no 5-hour limit. OpenAI’s help center confirms both seat types include ChatGPT and Codex.
Workspaces need at least two paid seats and, since August 24, 2026, can have up to 200. Some workspaces created before June 24, 2026 still have legacy Codex-only seats. On individual plans, ChatGPT Free has limited Codex access and Plus offers expanded use; see the vendor’s pricing page for current individual prices in your region.
- Best for: companies that already use ChatGPT across departments.
- Pros: no separate developer tool to buy; flexible seat swaps between Standard and Premium.
- Cons: 200-seat cap on Business; Enterprise pricing is not public.
- Pricing (as of October 2026): Standard $20 annual / $25 monthly; Premium $100 / $125.
How should a team choose?
Start from the subscriptions you already pay for, then fill gaps. A team on ChatGPT Business or Claude Team can pilot Codex or Claude Code at no extra cost; a team that lives in GitHub gets the most governance per dollar from Copilot Business; and Cursor is worth testing if developers prefer its editor and you can budget for API usage.
Steps that help:
- Count developers and how many hours a day they use an assistant.
- Pilot two tools on the same real tickets for two weeks.
- Track usage: credits (Copilot), shared pools (Cursor) or seat limits (Claude, ChatGPT).
- Budget for overages, especially third-party models in Cursor.
- Check admin requirements such as SSO, audit logs and IP indemnity.
Example cost for 10 developers at list prices: Copilot Business is $190 a month, Claude Team or ChatGPT Business with Standard seats on annual billing is $200, and Cursor Premium seats are $300 before any API usage.

How we chose
We picked the four coding assistants that development teams most often compare, and used their public pricing pages and help-center articles as checked on October 17, 2026, plus SpaceX’s announcement of The X Subscription. We did not benchmark code quality; descriptions are based on public documentation. Prices and usage limits change frequently, so confirm them on each vendor’s page before buying.
